Valentine’s Day, Heart Month and Love

HealthFlex wishes a Happy Valentine’s Day to all.

First, Let’s Celebrate National Heart Month.
Everyone knows that Valentine’s Day arrives in mid-February, but few realize that it is also National Heart Month. As caretakers, that means you should take the time to get heart healthy.

Please schedule an annual check-up with your doctor because of many factors and conditions:

  • 1 in 3 American adults have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Nearly 29 million adult Americans have high cholesterol
  • More than 37 million U.S. adults are still smoking
  • Obesity also affects 1 in 3 Americans and nearly 1 in 6 children age 2 to 19
  • Diabetes can damage blood vessels and nerves that help control the heart of  nearly 1 in 10 people in the U.S.

By the way, high blood pressure does not exhibit any symptoms and it can lead to heart disease and/or strokes. The good news is that hypertension can be controlled with medication, diet and exercise. While most people make New Year’s Resolutions to try losing “that stubborn 10 or 20 pounds”, they should make a renewed effort during Heart Month to keep exercising.

Maintain a Heart Healthy Diet and Exercise.
Unhealthy eating patterns and physical inactivity can also cause heart disease and high blood pressure. So try to cut out fried foods and heavy meats. Instead, eat more fruits, lots of vegetables, fish, poultry, grains and nuts. Try to avoid snacking between meals and also try staying away from second helpings.

To balance out what you’re eating, exercise at least 20 minutes a day, at least 3 to 5 days a week. If you can maintain this regimen, you’ll notice you’ll feel better, sleep better, and even lose some weight.

So remember to take all of these suggestions to heart: schedule a physical exam soon to determine if you have hypertension.

How Much One Patient Loves HealthFlex…
“When our grandmother became ill, our family was lost. HealthFlex stepped in and handled everything. They knew more info about her diagnosis before we did which was very impressive. They are very professional, accommodating and sincere.” – M.P.

Again, Happy Valentine’s Day and National Heart Month from HealthFlex!

Honoring Florence Nightingale With 2020 “Year of the Nurse”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife”, in honor of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Born into a wealthy British family in Florence, Italy, in 1820, she was the self-taught “pioneer of modern nursing” who proved that London hospital patients died at a rate of 90% while those who were sick and did not go to a hospital died at a 60% rate.

In 1860, she established the world’s first professional nursing school at St. Thomas Hospital in London. “The Nightingale Pledge” –– taken by new nurses, and the Florence Nightingale Medal, which was the highest international distinction that a nurse can receive, were names in her honor.

Because of the groundbreaking work of Ms. Nightingale, we thank our incredible nursing team who follow boldly in her trailblazing footsteps.

Happy Year of the Nurse from HealthFlex!

“Through The Eyes of a Home Care Therapist”
A story from a HealthFlex Physical Therapist
(The patient’s name has been changed.)

The chaos that ensues during illness and injury can overshadow the beauty around us. The love of friends and family can be so powerful as to shine through even the darkest moments.

This is a story of love and friendship, a story I have been blessed to witness as a home health worker, a stranger, and now a friend.

Weak and very frail from months of illness, Walter returned home from the hospital to find that his beloved garden had been planted and lovingly cared for by his dearest friend. Too weak to care for himself, Walter’s friend became his caregiver, helping with cooking, cleaning, personal care and gardening.

Walter’s home-based physical therapy began shortly after his discharge from the hospital. Even as a frail man, Walter was larger than life. His personality was gregarious and positive. He set goals to walk and hold his granddaughter due to be born in January. Walter’s desire to walk was met head on by the reality of months of a strength-zapping illness. Standing required the support of two people and Walter’s friend was right there to help. Short and difficult sessions of standing were punctuated with long rest sessions filled with storytelling and laughter of two lifelong friends.

Although Walter never walked again, he achieved his goal of meeting his son’s first child. Too weak to travel, Walter heard the coos of his granddaughter over the phone held to his ear by his dear friend. He said goodbye to his son, quietly shared the moment with his friend by his side, and drifted off to sleep.

Walter died the next day with his friend by his side.

Several months later Walters’s friend gave me a gift from Walter’s garden. A gift of new friendship that I planted in my yard. Every so often, when the plant grows, I snip off a branch and plant it in a new pot and give it to a new friend or a person in need, because that is what Walter would have wanted… to share the love.

This experience with the patient and the gifting of the plant has become a local community building effort in my area. The elementary school children, individuals and businesses will be growing and propagating the plants. The plants will be delivered to local homebound and at risk residents (private homes, SNFs, churches, school site counselors, correction facilities, hospice, etc.) This project is intended to build communities for people who do not have the means to build their own.

Thank you to HealthFlex for giving me the opportunity to share in the lives of our patients.

Look who is featured in The San Francisco Business Times… HealthFlex!

Oakland-based company aims to keep patient care for the elderly at home in the Bay Area.

Every company wants to be featured in the news. But not every company is fortunate enough to have that opportunity.

HealthFlex did –– and we are truly honored to be acknowledged by our community with a front cover article on August 1, 2019 in the San Francisco Business Times.

Wyatt Kroopf, a writer at the Times, just published a story about our fast-growing company that’s now working with such healthcare giants as Dignity Health, Kaiser Permanente, and doctor network Brown and Toland.

Since 2012, we have invested in quality –– for both patient care and our employees’ well-being –– offering robust benefits and creating a strong, nurturing workplace. Those steps helped pave the way for HealthFlex’s growth to over 240 employees with a low turnover rate.

“We want to develop our private duty sector so that we can be a one-stop hub,” said Alex Koshevatsky. “We want to be able to provide all the services that a patient needs in a home setting.”
