Valentine’s Day, Heart Month and Love

HealthFlex wishes a Happy Valentine’s Day to all.

First, Let’s Celebrate National Heart Month.
Everyone knows that Valentine’s Day arrives in mid-February, but few realize that it is also National Heart Month. As caretakers, that means you should take the time to get heart healthy.

Please schedule an annual check-up with your doctor because of many factors and conditions:

  • 1 in 3 American adults have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Nearly 29 million adult Americans have high cholesterol
  • More than 37 million U.S. adults are still smoking
  • Obesity also affects 1 in 3 Americans and nearly 1 in 6 children age 2 to 19
  • Diabetes can damage blood vessels and nerves that help control the heart of  nearly 1 in 10 people in the U.S.

By the way, high blood pressure does not exhibit any symptoms and it can lead to heart disease and/or strokes. The good news is that hypertension can be controlled with medication, diet and exercise. While most people make New Year’s Resolutions to try losing “that stubborn 10 or 20 pounds”, they should make a renewed effort during Heart Month to keep exercising.

Maintain a Heart Healthy Diet and Exercise.
Unhealthy eating patterns and physical inactivity can also cause heart disease and high blood pressure. So try to cut out fried foods and heavy meats. Instead, eat more fruits, lots of vegetables, fish, poultry, grains and nuts. Try to avoid snacking between meals and also try staying away from second helpings.

To balance out what you’re eating, exercise at least 20 minutes a day, at least 3 to 5 days a week. If you can maintain this regimen, you’ll notice you’ll feel better, sleep better, and even lose some weight.

So remember to take all of these suggestions to heart: schedule a physical exam soon to determine if you have hypertension.
